When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because
they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 9.36

This verse comes after Jesus preaches the Sermon on the Mount. It comes after the teachings about how blessed are the meek; the poor in spirit; the merciful; and those who are persecuted.
It comes after the Golden Rule: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7.12)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. a shepherd. This verse comes after Jesus lives out what he was preaching. In the chapters that follow the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus travels around caring for all kinds of people in body, mind and spirit. He has compassion for all kinds of people who are in need. Then, we get to this part:

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because
they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. The
harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of
the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
Matthew 9.36-38

There were so many people in need. The “shepherds’, those in authority were harassing the people. The “shepherds” were neglecting their responsibilities to care for all. Jesus calls the disciples
and calls us today to care for the harassed, the helpless and all in need.

Jesus taught us  –  showed us  –  and calls every one of us to look beyond ourselves and see the needs that are all around us and around the world. We live in a place of abundance, a land of plenty.
It is way too easy to neglect our responsibilities to have compassion and to care for all those in need.

Jesus is calling every one of us and the church to have compassion, to care for all-to roll up our sleeves and go to work, to
be generous.

This summer, we will gather to worship and share the love and grace of Jesus as one body of Christ. We will be one in worship and one in mission. We are united into one as we confess, pray,
sing, praise, listen, gather around God’s Holy Meal and as we are sent to serve God’s mission to heal and restore all at Lord of Life and beyond. Please be in prayer about God’s mission. Please speak with me about discerning God’s mission for us as we move forward united as one body of Jesus Christ.

+ Praise be to God from whom all blessings flow
